The Chaos ThinkSite has adopted the convention of capitalizing this crucial but oft-misunderstood term so to distinguish it from the common connotqtion of "chaos" as the condition of utter confusion; an incomprehensible mess; a jumble; a state of lawlessness; an abyss or chasm; and most pertinently, the complete absence of order. Chaos is none of these but something else altogether. It will be the purpose of this forum to discover exactly what that is.

What becomes immediately clear in many dialogues about the so-called "new science" is that some folks refer to it as "complexity" while others, including the creators of this forum, call it Chaos (wherein the term is capitalized to distinguish it from the conventional definition, i.e., the "complete absence of order.") Therefore, this sub-forum will be dedicated to determining whether the distinction is substantive or merely semantic. So let's begin with the general question: Which term you prefer...and why so?

The universe is so dynamically complex and so highly sensitive to initial conditions that any link between cause and effect is necessarily obscure rendering the future unknowable in advance.
